Sun of a Gun

Style isn't just about what you wear;  sure, it helps to have amazing shoes but personal style is also about the places you travel, the food you eat, the books you read and yes, what's in your iPod.  Danish popstar Nana Øland Fabricius of 'Oh Land' has been making the fashion set tap their Louboutins since she broke onto the scene last year and is just now starting to hit the mainstream with her ethereal vocals and electro-pop beats. The buzz for Oh Land is palpable and she made some serious waves at Austin's SXSW this week.  Okay, it doesn't hurt that she's insanely gorgeous in a Heidi Klum-y sort of way (if you're into that), but you simply cannot deny her raw, outside-the-box talent.  Want to up your style quotient this weekend?  You can download her albums right here.  Enjoy!

A Mighty Craic

Jil Sander and Michael Kors Spring 2011 - photos courtesy style.com

When it comes to fashion, I think Irish poet and author, Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde, said it best:  "I can resist everything except temptation."

Happy St. Paddy's Day, my little clovers.  I feel lucky to have you every single day!

Like most women, I'm a study in contrasts.  I waste two hours every week watching Brad Womack make out with his harem of 30 women and I secretly idolize Snoop, then turn around and tell my sweet, loyal husband that he should be more romantic.  I tell my daughter to eat all her carrots but dive right into our club pack of Mini Eggs the second she leaves the room.  I sometimes get jealous of my 8 month-old because he gets to wear a onesie all day, but I write a fashion blog.  The shame!

No matter how rumpled and dishevelled you are on weekends, you can easily morph, Superwoman-like, into your executive alter-ego on Monday mornings.   I'm feeling totally inspired by this look from the DKNY Spring runway because you can take pieces you already own (a good white shirt and tailored pants) and amp them up with a few slammin' accessories.  Real Life Runway Tip:  These patent pointy-toed pumps from Spring and cute canvas bow belt from Gap will instantly give your work outfits polish and ladylike appeal.  Try swapping the tan trousers for a black pencil skirt or pants or layer up with a black blazer.  If you're not fond of red, have fun with electric blue or pink pumps (at Zara and Spring, respectively).  Oh, and be sure to push your sleeves up to your elbows - it's a small detail but will automatically make you look more confident;  don't ask why, just do it!  (That must be my inner CEO talking.  Now, back to work!  Hee)

Found: A Sleeker Slicker

Roots' Newport Mac & rainy day chic from Stella McCartney Spring 2011 (courtesy style.com)

Around this time of year, the snow turns to rain and we turn to our closets in search of cute raingear.  By now, you probably have a pair of wellies, but what about your raincoat?  Mine is a shapeless bright yellow thing from Canadian Tire that I convince myself is a classic (ie. I wore the same one when I was 6) and certainly keeps me dry, but does absolutely nothing for my style.  With this insanely cute and ultra-feminine rain slicker from Roots, you'll find yourself hoping for hailstorms and showers, if only so you can show off your new raincoat to all of your friends.

The rain is inevitable so you might as well face it fiercely.  The Newport Mac is selling out fast at Roots stores nationwide or online here.

(Ooh..and if you get it by 10 am on March 21st, you'll get an extra $25 off.  Singin' in the rain, indeed!)

This %*$ is Bananas

Suno, Stella McCartney and Prada Spring 2011 - photos courtesy style.com

Before Gaga, there was Carmen Miranda.  Stella McCartney, Miuccia Prada and Suno all paid homage to the gutsy Brazilian samba singer with bright, whimsical prints, from bananas at Prada to bold citrus prints at Stella McCartney.  It's a tricky trend indeed and requires confidence a-la-Carmen to pull it off.  Will you go bananas for fruit prints this spring or do you already get enough vitamin C?

Speaking of oranges, say hi to them for me if you're off to Florida for March Break.  Happy weekend everyone!

Here are a few fruity finds:
