GET SPORTY: 3 Winning Looks

Seems like everyone's super-fanning sports these days. And let's face it, while we all know the die-hards - the remote-control clenchers, the 5 am hockey practice parents, the protein shake shakers - some of us just aren't so hardcore. I studied Kinesiology at Western. Seriously. But do I remember the difference between a fibia and tibia? NO. And why, of all the names they could possibly have chosen did someone choose to purposely screw up first year anatomy students? I watch the Olympics. I catch the playoffs sometimes. I definitely watch the Superbowl, but mostly for the ads, the nachos and the halftime show. And thanks to YouTube, I don't even have to do that anymore. I'd rather be doing than watching. And by doing I mean shopping.

But as for sporty fashion? Okay, that I get. That I like. If there's a superfan for sporty clothes, it's me. I wear the uniform proudly, flying my 'Team Fashion' banner high. And since 'sporty' is such a huge trend right now, as evidenced by the reams of designers who showed models-turned-athletes on the runways and Alexander Wang's H&M collab, I'm not the only one who's a big fan.

This season, sporty influences work no matter what the occasion. For work, keep it subtle with a streamlined baseball jacket or an elastic belt. For the weekend, rock sneakers, faux-leather trackpants and cozy bright puffers. And for a fun night out, whether you're hitting the sports bar or (hopefully) not, it's all about flirty borrowed-from-the-boys pieces like a football jersey and cute baseball cap.

Check out these 3 winning looks. So sporty. So cool. Go Team!

Pressed, primped and pulled-together is one thing. But cool? Now that's a real challenge for conservative girls. While some are just born with it, most of us have to work a little harder to get an edge. Luckily, the right pieces can score you that street cred you crave. We've pulled together some of our fav ways to add instant edge to your wardrobe this season, no extra piercings required. Phew...

TREND REPORT | Shades of Grey

Just got back from New York and like always when I get home from this beautiful city, I feel inspired. There's just something about the way a New Yorker throws herself together that exudes character and confidence. And yet after this trip, it's not a boot or a handbag that stood out to me as a must. On this trip, it was the colours that came out on top from the classic neutrals to the pop-brights (see yesterday's post) that stood out like yellow cabs against the concrete. But while I'll always love black, my go-to neutral this fall and winter will be about quiet, subtle but sublimely sophisticated grey.

New York It-chicks sailed through the city this week in all shades of grey, worn most strikingly from head-to-toe, acting a lot like urban camo against the backdrop of sidewalks, buildings and the grey fall skies. And while you'd think all grey would be boring, it's surprisingly not. The NYC secret? Mix up shades of grey in loads of different textures to achieve wardrobe 'grey'tness.

If this hasn't been played out too much already (and even if it has), I've rounded up 50 of my fav grey finds. Mix these picks up with abandon and you'll look urban in all the right ways for fall, even if you've yet to set foot in NYC...

INTERGALACTIC PLANETARY

Photo via Shopbop

I still refuse to watch Gravity - like, seriously, the idea of being stuck in space forever (or at least until the oxygen runs out) with George Clooney is enough to give me nightmares. And Star Trek/Star Wars (same thing, right?) are things I hear randomly referenced but end up sounding like blah, blah, blah, klingon, blah, there is no try, blah, blah. Beam me up, but never make me watch either, please. Space-inspired gear, though? All over that like an astronaut on a pack of freeze-dried ice cream.

Give me hologram, shiny silver, alien-ripped waxed jeans and anything with stars this fall. But especially today. Because it's Hallowe'en y'all, which makes it the ideal day to shop for something fun.

Here are some of my subtly spacey finds from Shopbop, the final frontier (or something like that...)

ps - my daughter's going as a peacock. my son has chosen a (REALLY SCARY, MOM) dinosaur. and my dog will be transformed into a hot dog tonight. i will document.

The Lovely Joe Fresh Holiday Lookbook

Photos via Joe Fresh

The Joe Fresh Holiday Lookbook arrived in my inbox recently and since I've finally accepted the cold weather, I think it's only right to share it with you. In a word: dreamy. The styling is perfect - the Nordic knits, the chunky scarves, the faux fur trims, and even the socks worn with heels. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. And because it's all Joe Fresh, it's affordable and wearable, so this fashion dream can actually come true for you (and you and you and you). The holiday collection drops in stores throughout November and December.

Speaking of Joe, I'll be heading to Toronto next week for Spring '15 World MasterCard Fashion Week so be sure to follow me all next week on this blog (and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) for my pretty people pics from the street, the studio and the big shows at David Pecaut Square.

Until then, happy weekend! Isn't it always?
